Judy Howells

Oil painter Judith Howells grew up in eastern Pennsylvania surrounded by beautiful, yet rapidly disappearing open land.  She received a BA from Wilson College where she was first introduced to plein air painting.  After graduation she worked as an art educator in public schools and for the Newark Museum.  She earned an MA in printmaking from Montclair State University.

Her smaller landscapes are plein air works completed on site, as rapidly changing light dictates working quickly and directly. Her larger paintings are more thoughtfully planned in the studio, more introspective pieces informed by her smaller studies.

"My work is most definitely about change, both of time and place, but I am not overtly preaching environmental issues.  I do consciously select rather solitary places, often overlooked spaces where land is vulnerable to man's encroachment.  I want that sense of solitude and vulnerability in my work.  My approach to painting requires a process of introspection to extract the essence and to abstract overwhelming detail in order to convey a certain resonance.  Though my style of painting is realistic, it is derived through a process of subjective scrutiny."
